 Corrosion
Decomposition of a material due to environmental influences, mostly the decomposition of metals caused by electrochemical processes. The corrosion of metals is generally caused by oxidation by atmospheric oxygen and is particularly accelerated in the presence of water and nobler metals. Therefore, the best method to protect metals against corrosion lies in the application of an adherent nonporous coating sealing the metal against oxygen, moisture and nobler metals. Coating with a more base metal (e. g. zinc on iron) also provides a good protective effect. Very efficient corrosion protecting layers can be generated by means of plasma technology, because layers properly applied by vacuum methods are particularly homogeneous and nonporous. Appropriate methods are plasma-enhanced PVD or CVD processes as well as plasma polymerisation. The application of such layers in corrosion protection is merely limited by their small thicknesses and elevated prices.
